ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROSTATE BIOPSIES?

Prostate biopsies methods

There are different methods of prostate biopsy, depending on the location of the lesion, patient’s anatomy and other factors. Your urologist will discuss and help you select the biopsy that is the most appropriate for your situation.

This allows us to better determine whether a man's prostate cancer will grow quickly or slowly (aggressiveness). This information is important is guiding him decide how best to treat it.

In either case, we have the expertise, technology and equipment to help you rule out or confirm presence of prostate cancer.

You can contact us for a clinic appointment for the assessment to see if you will benefit from these techniques.

  1. Transrectal MRI-US targeted prostate biopsy
Transrectal biopsies are done using live ultrasound images from an ultrasound probe inserted through the rectum. Your doctor then use the ultrasound images to correlate with the MRI images to guide him to obtain multiple prostate tissue samples.
  2. Transperineal MRI-US targeted prostate biopsy
Transperineal biopsies are done using images from an ultrasound probe through the rectum and correlated with the MRI images, but the tissues samples are taken through the skin between the scrotum and anus. This is an area called the perineum, hence the term transperineal biopsy. It can also be done with the aid of a robotic automated device to position the biopsy guide to allow the urologist to better target the cancer. This is known as robotic transperineal prostate biopsy.
  3. MRI-targeted prostate biopsy and saturation prostate biopsy
In some cases, the MRI shows a specific index lesion that can then be targeted and biopsied using image targeted software. In others, the PSA continues to rise despite apparent absence of an index lesion and patients may need a saturation prostate biopsy with more samples than a standard biopsy to exclude occult prostate cancer.
